Redlands is a quaint, historical town. It is known for its many
citrus groves, Victorian and historical architecture, and the University
of Redlands - a prestigious private University. Several historical
sites dot the cityscape. The downtown
area is filled with shops restaurants, cafes, coffee houses and
services.
Redlands was founded in 1881 by Frank E. Brown and
Edward G. Judson, both from colder climes, both
interested in developing the area. The city was incorporated
shortly thereafter in 1888.
For much of its history, Redlands
was the navel orange growing capital of the world, with
the citrus industry as the main focus of its economy. It continues
to preserve much of its citrus heritage
in its 350 Victorian era homes, also known as "Marmalade
Mansions." Over
the last century Redlands has grown, yet it maintains its old
world small town feel.
